Profesional container shipments

Container shipments are a modern way of freight delivery using specially designed containers. It is the safest and most financially affordable method of transporting goods anywhere in the world. Container shipments can be carried out using several modes of transport and are thus considered a multimodal type of forwarding. The use of containers reduces the risk of damaging or losing the cargo to a minimum because the container acts as separate cargo packaging: it is made of durable metal and protects the goods from exposure to different environmental conditions. The goods are transferred from one vehicle to another while still inside the same container, as placed by the consignor, preventing damage to the cargo during the reloading process.

The Ursus Forwarding specialists have accrued extensive hands-on experience in the organisation and coordination of container shipments. We offer container shipments for your goods, as well as all the related services, such as freight insurance, customs formalities, door-to-door delivery, etc.

A modern way to deliver your cargo!

The idea of combined freight forwarding by road with subsequent transfer to train or ship was born some 60 years ago. A certain transport company came up with a solution that greatly improved the process in all respects. They placed goods in containers to simplify and accelerate the transfer of goods from vehicles to ships. With the introduction of international standards for sea container sizes, it became much easier to transport them on heavy-goods vehicles, trains and ships and to handle at ports around the world.

Types of container shipment:

Ursus Forwarding offers its customers the following container shipments.

Container shipments by road

For container shipments by road, the cargo is placed in a special container which is sealed after being loaded, thus securing against unauthorised access to the container and ensuring the safety of the cargo during carriage. Thanks to its design, the container protects the cargo from environmental factors and tampering. They are carried by vehicles equipped with special container trailers. Container shipments by road have gained popularity thanks to price, speed and convenience. They are popular because road transport is used to transport all types of sea and rail containers to ports or railway terminals where they are transferred to another type of transport for long-distance carriage. In addition to road transport, containers are shipped from ports and railway terminals to final consignees in destination countries.

Container shipments by rail

Container shipments by rail have gained popularity among many exporters and importers. This is mainly due to the convenience and safety of this type of transport. Container shipments by rail reduce the risk of damaging cargo to a minimum, enable large volumes of goods to be transported at the same time and allow the delivery of oversized goods. Delivery of freight from the station terminal to remote or difficult-to-access areas is usually done by road, since container shipments by rail do not offer the possibility of door-to-door deliveries without transferring the containers to another type of transport in the process. Our company offers to deliver your cargo to the designated consignee regardless of its geographical location. Experience and the available transportation resources enable our specialists to offer customers container shipments by rail that are virtually unrestricted in terms of route selection.

Container shipments by sea

Container shipments by sea is one of the core activities of our company. During more than 13 years of being involved in the sea container shipping sector, we have developed an extensive network of contacts, gained invaluable experience and insights that allow our specialists to organise sea container shipments of all levels of complexity, including both with sea- and ocean-going ships, regardless of the route and cargo specifications. Container shipment by sea is considered to be the cheapest mode of international delivery and is notable for its safety because of a very low risk of accident and the containers reducing the risk of cargo damage to a minimum. Some disadvantages of container shipments by sea would be the dependency of shipping traffic on weather and the speed of delivery, which is significantly slower than container shipments by rail.
The introduction of international standards for shipping containers has had a significant impact on global trade. Manufacturers were able to load goods in containers at their factories and send them to the recipients without the need for unloading along the way. The consignee received the goods in the same container in which they were loaded at the factory. The rise of standardised sea container shipments meant that production plants could be located very far from the buyers of the goods, yet could still offer goods at a competitive price despite the great distance involved.
Standard containers are designed to meet the established requirements of exporters and importers of internationally traded goods. There are many different types of sea container with various dimensions adapted for the transportation of various types of goods, from various liquids and perishable goods to hazardous substances. Standard 20- and 40-foot sea containers are the most commonly used sea freight containers in the world. These containers are airtight, but are not equipped with any cooling or ventilation equipment unlike refrigerator-type or ventilated containers. A 20-foot standard sea container can carry 11 Euro-pallets of cargo. Such containers are also referred to as dry shipping containers or dry vans.

Ventilated freight container

The 20-foot ventilated cargo container is equipped with a ventilation system by means of an opening on the side of the container. These openings serve as a source of air flow and circulation. Thanks to these characteristics, the container is particularly suitable for the transport of goods requiring a constant temperature and conditions. Thanks to the ventilation system, the 20-foot ventilated container can remove hot air and ensure the intake of fresh air, preventing condensation and cargo damage caused by exposure to humidity. These containers are usually used to transport coffee and are therefore referred to as coffee containers.

Refrigerator containers

Freight containers with cooling function are more commonly known as refrigerator containers. They are outfitted with equipment capable of maintaining a set temperature from -25 to +25 degrees (Celsius) throughout transportation. There are also refrigerator containers capable of maintaining temperatures as low as -60 degrees Celsius. Although refrigerator containers are equipped with an integrated internal temperature maintenance system, they need to be connected to an external power source, such as a ship generator or a power supply at the port. When ordering a refrigerator container for transport, it is worth checking that the necessary equipment for maintaining the internal temperature of the container will be available throughout the entire shipping route. Refrigerator containers are normally used for the transport of frozen foods such as fish, meat, fruit and other perishable goods. Such containers are also widely used for the transportation of medicines and pharmaceutical products.

Flat rack container

Flat rack or platform-type containers are intended for the transportation of goods whose dimensions or weight do not allow them to be placed in standard containers. The dimensions of these containers correspond to the dimensions of the standard 20- or 40-foot containers. Flat rack containers do not have a roof or sides, facilitating loading from above or the sides. Because of their properties, flat rack containers are particularly suitable for the transport of heavy or oversized cargo, such as industrial equipment, construction equipment, agricultural machinery or any other heavy machinery. Such loads are loaded onto the flat rack using a crane or other appropriate loading machinery. Since flat rack containers do not have the side and top parts, increased attention should be paid to ensure the protection of the cargo against heavy rain or wind. Securing the cargo with straps will allow it to remain on the container in any weather. When ordering a flat rack container for carriage, the carrier should be given clear instructions about the anchorage points that can be used for lifting during the loading or unloading process, for example, using a crane. The carrier should also be given other instructions related to the handling of the cargo, as may be relevant. This will allow the prevention of cargo damage and other undesired incidents.

Open top containers

Open top containers are included in the standard container category. Their dimensions correspond to the size of standard 20- or 40-feet containers, but they have an opening roof. Such containers are used to carry loads with height exceeding the normal container standard or, for example, goods that are too heavy to be loaded using standard loading equipment require the use of a crane to load the cargo from above. Unlike flat rack containers, open top containers have side walls that serve as extra protection for the transported cargo. A tarpaulin is used to protect the top of the cargo when carrying goods in open top containers. It should be noted that due to design of open top containers the top loading opening is slightly lower than the inner cargo area of the container. The maximum load capacity of a 20-foot open top container is approximately 28 tonnes, while the 40-foot container of this type is capable of carrying up to 30 tonnes of cargo. When ordering this type of container, the anchorage points intended for lifting the load should be clearly indicated and instructions for handling the cargo should be provided to the carrier.

Tank containers

Tank containers are also referred to as ISO tanks. They are containers designed to transport liquids and various types of gases. Tank containers can be used, for example, for the transport of liquid foodstuffs, as well as various hazardous substances. When using ISO tanks for the transport of hazardous substances, additional requirements for the transporting of hazardous cargo should be taken into account. If the ISO tank (tank container) is labelled with hazardous cargo labels, it must not be used for the transport of liquid foodstuffs. Conversely, ISO tanks intended for liquid foodstuffs should not be used for the transporting of hazardous substances. Tank containers correspond to the dimensions of 20-foot standard sea containers. The size, weight and size of the tanks and the material from which they are made may vary depending on the intended use of the tank. They are made of materials that are neutral to the transported cargo and equipped with devices enabling unloading by gravity flow and under pressure. The tanks have thermal insulation and a heating system for unloading the contents at low temperatures. They may be double-walled for injecting insulating material and may be divided into several compartments.
